Hello Birney families and friends,

Happy Holidays!  It was so nice to relax this week!  Here is the latest Birney Buzz  that came home in backpacks, I would have gotten it to you sooner but the minute I left school I started feeling under the weather – just a head cold, but I laid low all weekend and feel much better (and tested negative for covid, thank goodness). Open the Buzz up, please, to see the directions that go with the covid test kit each of our students took home for the break. There are two tests, one for New Year's Eve (12/31) and one for January 3 before school. With the speed of the Omicron variant surpassing all other variants so far, we are well aware we need to be able to identify any positive cases before the students come to school, just  to keep us all safe.

Just a reminder to all our families - this is the first year where we are 'live' in-person and our winter break has been reduced to two weeks (we were a 'year-round calendar' school until last year).  I say this to remind the upper graders that we return to school on Monday, January 3, but also to ask for grace and patience as we adults adapt and adjust to a new reality in our professional lives where for the last 20-25 years we have had a 4/5-week break at the new year and now we don't.  Just know that is going to be part of our return to work next week - we understand that the traditional calnedar is now the norm, but we are still in mourning!

This email is to get you the information about the new After-School Enrichment classes starting up in January so you can plan for your student(s) as needed. I have copied it from the PTA Digest – thanks to the ASE Committee and Dianne Stramiello for getting that out earlier this week. Classes have start dates between January 11 and January 25, so read the fine print carefully to be sure you know when classes start, stop, the age limits and the cost - all vary. Thanks also to the ASE Committee for doubling the amount of after-school classes we are offering, as well as negotiating with each company for the lowest possible pricce and for scholarship opportunities. Make sure you ask each company about sibling discounts and/or scholarships if that is something you need to know about.

Here is the schedule with a link to the flyer for each class:

I hope you are able to find something that suits your family’s needs. The links to Garden, Theater and Maker's Studio are not live – Theater has been filled from the previous waiting list, the other two have emails added.

I hope all the links are good, and I am sure you will have questions about things I haven't considered, so as always a simple reply to this email gets you to my inbox which I am checking fairly regularly.

Take care,

Happy, merry everything!

Ms. Amanda
