Hello Birney families and friends,

This week's  Birney Buzz marks the beginning of the end of this very strange year we have gone through together. On the parent page you will see links to the 2021-2022 calendar, the Prime Time application and the SAY San Diego website. You will see the announcement that our  6th hour activities will be ending on Thursday, June 10.  You will also see a preliminary description of the school year structure next year, since we are going back to our typical schedule.

I remind you if you have a kindergartener or a 5th grader, the last day of school. June 15, will begin remotely at 9:00 on Zoom with some online end if the year activities and then we will host a drive-through promotion in the Birney driveway for kindergarten from 11:30-12:30 and for 5th grade from 1:00-2:00.  You are welcome to dress up, both yourselves and your cars, and we will encourage you to drive around to the mosaic in front of school where we will take your family pictures with your phone.

The most excitement for the kids is that next week is  Spirit Week - I know, I'm sorry!  We're giving you the weekend to think about crazy hair and backwards day, because we're kicking off Spirit Week with that!  The rest of the week is easier - Sports Day Tuesday, and many of us will be rocking uor Padres gear on that day, then PJs on Wednesday and Birney Spirit wear and a stuffy to bring to school on Thursday. So really, your biggest challenge is Monday. Good luck! Please make sure whatever it is can last through a hot Monday without melting, causing a meltdown or falling apart!

There are a couple things happening tomorrow, Thursday, which you might want to know about.  First, beginning at 2 pm we will have a PTA table with Birney merchandise in front of the school.  If you are interested in purchasing a t-shirt or a Birney PTA mask, that's where it will be.  If you pick up from a different gate, feel free to swing around to the front if you want to browse the merch table. Remember, Thursday is Birney wear day, but kids can rock school spirit any day next week using their Birney wear if they aren't inclined to dress in PJs or sports.

Next, tomorrowa, Thursday at 5:30, the SDUSD Family Engagement Team will be hosting a meeting designed for families to learn more about this summer's  Level Up San Diego programs and summer school. Here is  the zoom link and flyer (Spanish) to attend that meeting and find out more about the Level Up Summer School programs.

As you know, everyone is now issued a Chromebook to use at home and at school.  This summer will be the first where we send our students home with computers.  I am attaching a slide deck about caring for the devices you may want to share with your child, here it is in  English, Spanish,  Arabic,  Tagalog and  Vietnamese.  Hope it helps you take care of the device.

School applications in Clever will be available through July 30, when we will switch over to the following school year and student rosters will be refreshed, so Clever will not be available to them after that till the start of the school year.  I also included information from the County Office of Ed about a broadband assistance program which might help some of you whose internet is lagging; there is also additional information in the slide deck for internet support.

I want to thank you all again for your support during Run for the Green - we raised $49,400 - just $600 shy of our goal - on Pledgestar, which is spectacular considering the year we have had and is just testament to how much you support our amazing IB and Specials programs.  ou had a chance to see, albeit remotely, via zoom and Google Classroom, the enriching activities the kids have here, and we appreciate your support. The final numbers for Run for the Green may be available later this week, I will be sure to give you the overall total, including our donations directly to FOAB, which may prove to nudge us over the $50,000 mark. If you still haven't donated and you wish to give us a push, go to the  FOAB website and find the donation button, and thanks again!

If you have an IB Learner who is dying to get the pencil, reassure them that Ms. Amanda will be stopping by to make up all the lost time - I had to order more pencils and they will be in late this week or early next. My intention has been to get everyone a pencil who is live, in-person, at school right now. I should be able to squeeze them all in between this week and next.  If you have an online learner who is jonesing for a pencil let me know, I can leave one in the office for you to retrieve.

Thank you for reading all my emails this year - I certainly feel like I have written more parent communication than ever, and I hope it helped. The school closure certainly shifted all of our roles in these kids' education and I applaud you in stepping up to the plate and assuring that your child was able to continue learning; we are pleasantly reassured, not surprised, just validated, when we see our end of the year assessments coming in showing considerable progress in the students who were able to remain engaged and actively learning.  We know how much of that is because of parental expectations and we thank you!  Still, we can't wait to be able to go back to doing what we do best, teaching 5 days a week, live, in-person.  We will reserve our zooms for parent meetings and special events!

Take care, happy Wednesday!

Ms. Amanda
