Hello Birney friends, families and the whole Birney community!

The latest Birney Buzz  has information about our 14th annual Run for the Green (RFTG), which will kick off on Family Friday, March 12.  There's a lot you can do to help us get the students motivated for the RFTG, our annual jogathon, so take a look at some of the ideas you can help us with.  Got gift cards you still haven't used?  We'll take them!  Got an almost-like-new toy, sports equipment or electronic thingy that you thought your kid would like but they didn't, or they outgrew it?  We'll take it.  Anything we can use as a prize for RFTG would be most appreciated!  There are also opportunities for you to promote your business by partaking in a sponsorship.  RFTG is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and as you know our fundraising goes to our Specials program.  Did you know we may be the only school that has kept their Specials going through the pandemic year of online learning?  It's because the kids LOVE them!

On another note, I do not yet have details for you regarding the target return date of April 12.  It is excruciatingly hard not being able to inform all of you how we will manage it, but we have to wait for the agreements to be signed - then stuff goes to the news before we know anything (that's hard too). Needless to say, I have extreme confidence in this Birney staff to make it optimal for our students - they always have this uncanny knack of knowing what is best for students. Please be patient with us as we reinvent yet another wheel as we explore whatever hybrid learning turns out to be.  You will receive a survey (from the district this time) which will ask you some questions in order to underatnd your family's preferences as we continue to expand onsite learning opportunities.  The survey will come out THIS WEEK and will be due March 12.  Please fill out a survey for each of your children.  The survey will ask you to choose from the following options:

    • Onsite/Online Hybrid – In this model, students will attend school in-person for a portion of the day/week with fewer students on campus at any given time. When not on campus, students will continue to participate in online learning. Health and safety protocols will apply, including wearing masks and physical distancing.

    • Onsite/Online Hybrid with Transportation - Only applicable if your child receives Special Education, Magnet, or VEEP transportation services (Please note that previously offered neighborhood bus routes will not be available at this time).

    • Online Only – In this model, students will continue to learn remotely participating in virtual instruction via zoom with a teacher, online learning platforms and independent work time.

This survey is similar to the Birney-specific survey you filled out before for the Phase 1 expansion - please do fill it out anyway, it is for different eyes and will be important to provide data so the district can anticipate staffing needs for onsite instruction.

Remember, ELAC Meeting for ELAC members tomorrow night, Thursday 03/04 4-5pm jsims@sandi.net for more information.

Enrollment for the coming school  year, 2021-2022, will commence right after Spring Break.  If you know anyone who is wondering how to enroll at Birney, have them email me at ahammondwilliams@sandi.net.

In the meantime, take care,

Ms. Amanda
