Hello Birney families and friends,

Happy Hump Day This new year presents some challenges as we navigate online learning, both at school and at home. As we begin to develop San Diego Unified’s reopening plans over the next couple of weeks, with the beginning of Phase One Appointment-Based Onsite Learning Reopening slated for October 13, I know you will want to stay up-to-date on the changes that are coming down the line.

Appointment-Based Onsite Support for Learning
Over the next two weeks, I will be working with Birney teachers to identify the students who are eligible for Phase One Appointment-Based onsite support for learning. We will be reviewing student progress towards goals and grade-level proficiency by analyzing our formative assessments.  As teachers formalize these assessments, please work with them to provide us with the most accurate, student-generated data we can get, meaning let them do the assessments independently (with the teacher). Once we have a set of eligible students, we will be creating appointments for groups of no more than 6 for grades K-3, or 8 for grades 4-5, to receive onsite support.

Of course, families continue to have the option to remain online as well. As the information comes to me, I will not hesitate to send it out to you as we move forward with our Phased Reopening of schools.

Specials
As of today, Wednesday, I know half of our school’s students enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with their Specials teachers. I appreciate the opportunity to reconnect with my teaching teams as we meet to collaboratively plan and navigate the brave new world of online learning. I am so inspired by the Birney teachers, and I hope that you are too! We are proud to be able to offer these enrichment classes for all students TK-5, and we appreciate your support for our Specials classes as we move through the year with our various fundraising efforts.

As you know, your support of our IB Program makes all this possible, so in advance of another successful Fall Fundraiser, we thank you! As your child is learning about the environment from Ms. Mindy, speaking Spanish with Señora Goudy, or learning music with Mr. Evans, remember that those classes are paid for by Friends of Alice Birney’s fundraising efforts! SPREAD THE WORD! Tell Friends & Family by sending at least 10 Boost! emails by this Friday using this link: https://www.boonsupply.com/collections/610281-birney-elementary?boost10. If you send 10 Boost! emails by Friday, your child will win a cool gold ninja coop keychain!  *Please make sure to tell people to enter your child’s name into the “SELLER” field with their Teacher’s name when placing an order! Our online store can be found directly by clicking on this link: https://www.boonsupply.com/355050

Don’t want to buy anything, but want to help? Donate $275 (the annual cost of an IB education for one child) & your child gets to join the Drive-In Movie Night at Birney! Please go to the FOABE website to the “Donate Now” section.  Please put your student’s name in the notes along with “For the Fall Fundraiser” - http://friendsofalicebirney.org/one-time-donation/ or you can click on the PayPal link. The kids got a visit from Miss Bee this week in this video https://youtu.be/LP8C44m75jk, click to see what they get with those 10 emails

FREE food at Birney
As you know,
classes halt instruction every day at noon so that you have the chance to walk up to school and grab a free lunch?  We have Meal Distribution for FREE at Birney daily from 12 to 2 pm and on Thursday, the bag will include Saturday breakfast and lunch. For Friday, the bag will include Sunday breakfast and lunch. That’s free milk/juice, fruit, and other yummy things.  Want to know what’s on the menu? Go to https://sandiegounified.org, click on Departments, then on Food and Nutrition Services.

MORE Distribution Days
We are organizing all of our supply distribution days, PTA merchandise sales, free book handouts (starting next Wednesday), garden giveaways, around the lunch service daily at Birney, why not make it part of your routine? Distribution depends on the up-coming learning tasks. Some grades need more supplies on-hand than others. Teachers will notify you of the distribution days but you can double-check the school calendar for distribution reminders.

Need to talk to me? I am always available by email!  My office hours for this week will be Friday from 2:30-3:30.  Topic: Open Door Office Hour, https://sandiegounified.zoom.us/j/97288030231 Meeting ID: 972 8803 0231 Password: b_ _ _

Need help with your device? Check a new device out at Birney daily from 12:00-2:00 during lunch service of Grab n Go meals, just stop by the office.  If your device is not working, first call the Online Learning Support hotline at (619) 732-1400 and walk through with a technician what is wrong. If they cannot fix over the phone, they will tell you where you can exchange. If you need support with your internet strength, check out the Family Technology Support for all things you need help with in the technology realm.
