Safe Storage Saves Lives! You Can Help Prevent Gun Violence
San Diego Unified is joining San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention in reminding parents and guardians of their responsibility to prevent young people from gaining access to unsecured firearms.
Safe storage – meaning that guns are locked, unloaded, and kept separate from ammunition – is the law and helps keep our children and schools safe.
The City of San Diego’s Safe Storage of Firearms Ordinance, which went into effect in September of 2019, requires city residents to safely lock or store firearms that are inside their residences when the firearm is not within the immediate control of its owner or of another authorized user. Trigger locks, gun safes, or lock boxes are all viable safety options.
Keeping firearms securely stored helps prevent small children from accidentally accessing the firearm and unintentionally shooting themselves or others; it also reduces the possibility that older children can use an unsecured firearm to commit school violence or suicide, scenarios that unfortunately happen every day in this country.
If you wish to learn more about firearm safety, safe gun storage, and other steps parents, students, and school staff can take to help reduce gun violence in our community, please visit our SDUSD Gun Violence Prevention page online. we are sharing some resources you may find useful. If your student(s) needs additional support, please know we have trained staff available to help. Caring spaces are available at schools for these conversations to occur.

Dear San Diego Unified Families:
We understand that when school shootings occur, there may be heightened emotions and concerns about safety issues on our school campuses.
To help families and staff discuss this tragedy with children of all ages, we are sharing some resources you may find useful. If your student(s) needs additional support, please know we have trained staff available to help. Caring spaces are available at schools for these conversations to occur.
To help families and staff discuss this tragedy with children of all ages,
Every San Diego Unified school has a safety plan and procedures that contribute to maintaining a safe learning environment for all of our students and staff members. Additionally, the Board of Education adopted a resolution in June about gun violence prevention, to inform families with the facts about gun safety and safe gun storage.
The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff remain paramount, and we must all do what we can to keep our school communities safe from gun violence.
Thank you for your partnership in support of our children.
Sincerely,
Fabi Bagula, Ph.D.
Acting Superintendent
San Diego Unified School District
