I am truly thankful for my amazing Birney team and delighted to see that they are rested and ready to forge ahead these three weeks till our winter break beginning 12/18. I have had a busy week so this newsletter is very late – I started it Monday morning! Now it’s Friday and I am emailing to remind you that…
- Grab-n-go lunches from 12:00-2:00 including an additional HUGE box of food – a gallon of milk, sour cream, a whole bag of potatoes, another of apples, some chili sauce and more!
- KINDERGARTEN distribution day TODAY from 1:00-2:00
- PTA Merchandise is on sale in front of school (where the lunches are)!
- One more week of Virtual Scholastic Book Fair through 12/13. Click Book Fair Video for more information and start browsing for holiday gifts and report card prizes!
- Yearbooks from last year are still here! Please email Pat Spaulding at [email protected] to arrange for a time to pick your yearbook up. You can still purchase a yearbook too, there are extra copies.
- Need to exchange a device? Check a new device out at Birney daily from 12:00-2:00 during lunch service of Grab n Go meals, just stop by the office. If your device is not working, first call the Online Learning Support hotline at (619) 732-1400 and walk through with a technician what is wrong. If they cannot fix over the phone, they will tell you where you can exchange. Big Retirement Announcement: I am both happy and sad to announce the retirement of two Birney Bees very close to all our hearts. Effective December 31, 2020, both Mr. Geno Lyons, 5th grade, and Mr. Liem Do, 40-year veteran of Birney, will be hanging up their Birney Bee hats to retire. I know you will join me in thanking them both for their years of service to our school, and plans for retirement celebrations will be out soon.
Birney’s Big Give: We are getting ready for our annual Big Give, our yearly one-day donation drive, which will be held on December 15, 2020. Please join us at friendsofalicebirney.org on the 15th to donate and follow our live updates on the progress of our fundraiser! All donations will support Birney’s award-winning International Baccalaureate (IB) program and specials classes, including Spanish, arts and gardening.
There’s no shortage of engaging online learning happening in every grade level all the way to break, and in Specials we have some very SPECIAL engagements for many of the students to enjoy.
Special Specials: Over the next 3 weeks, Mr. Evans and Coach Lord will be sharing an online version of the Nutcracker with grades 1-3 during their weekly 60-minute lesson block during Specials times. Kindergarteners will be able to participate in the same virtual field trip with their teachers during their regular class time. Then, the same field trip will be shared with grades 4/5 on 12/1 and 12/3. Mr. Evans applied for and received a very special opportunity for a select number of students(we selected 3rd grade) to participate in the Globe’s virtual Grinch Radio Show, including a pre-show workshop. They will participate in the Grinch Radio Show on Wednesday, 12/9 from 1:00-2:30.
Online Learning will continue into the New Year: You may now be aware that our district has determined that given the current state of COVID cases in San Diego we will NOT be opening back up for Phase Two on January 4. The Superintendent and Board will make further announcements on January 13, in the meantime we will continue remote learning with minimal Phase 1 at school.
