Hello Birney families and friends, it’s Monday!
Here are a couple of takeaways about online learning from the last few weeks:
· It is great to see so many students showing up for school! Thanks to all the parents who work hard to make sure their kids are dressed and fed, ready for the day at 8:50, so they can be online in time for school to start! Well done!
· Lots of families are making time for independent reading to be part of their daily schooltime. But if that is not possible, I recommend saving the 30-40 minutes before bedtime to promote reading, either together or apart, so students aren’t losing that stamina they need to develop to be successful readers.
· Assessments are hard to do online! Teachers gathering data for report cards have online assessments they need students to complete independently. Please support your student and your teachers by allowing students to complete these assessments by themselves as much as possible. If not possible, please talk to your teacher about it. Most importantly, please do not do the work for your student!
I am so proud to say that our LCFF forms submitted have doubled (from 57 to 115) – way to go, Birney Bees! We still need about some 420 students! We all want to keep over $107,000 of federal funding coming to our school! Birney is a at risk of losing ‘Title 1’ status, which would mean losing about $100,000. Parents, please fill out the LCFF form! The LCFF Form can be found in the PowerSchool Parent Portal (https://powerschool.sandi.net). You need a special password to access the parent portal which you get from me by sending an email to
[email protected] so I can verify that you are who you say you are! A
job aid is available for parents to assist with entering information for the LCFF Form. The LCFF Form is available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese in the Parent Portal. PLEASE do fill it out, we count on hearing from every family to make sure we keep out Title One status which enables us to keep our English Learner and Reading Specialist support. Doing this for your child's school will make a world of difference for next year's funding.
Wednesday is a big day out front of school at lunchtime! In addition to Ms. LeeAnn checking library books out to 4th and 5th grade students, click the link for directions. Remember
their book holds must be completed by 11am Wednesday. Curbside Check Out
This week and next Ms. Mindy is handing out plants and seeds to students, especially to TK/K, 1st and 2nd students who did not get to pick up last week. Look for Ms. Mindy’s table on the lawn out front of school.
Please spread the word to last year’s 5th graders that 2019-2020 Birney yearbooks are in the office for distribution and/or purchase. Please email Pat Spaulding at
[email protected] to arrange for a time to pick your yearbook up.
THIS EVENING, Birney PTA is launching the first of what we hope will be several special parent forums for building community, networking, exploring learning options and generally making friends. Our first meeting is aimed at our kindergarten parents. Click here for the
invitation letter, Zoom link and other information.
Reminder: Every student should have a signed “Universal Form” on file with his/her school for the 2020-21 academic year. If you have not turned in yours, here is a fillable PDF form:
English /
Spanish Please print and sign the form and then either mail it back to your school or drop off the printed copy. We have received about 20% so far – please help us by doing your part!
