Hello Birney Families and Friends,
This Friday, October 9 is Family Friday at 2:30. We will be celebrating Birney’s virtual version of the International Day of Peace. Typically, this is a community event where we gather in the shape of a peace sign on the playground…but instead … here is the Zoom link:

ELAC meeting will take place October 9th, before Family Friday, from 1-2pm. It's a great virtual-way to meet other parents of children who are learning English and to help make a difference in our school. The role of ELAC members are to learn about and inform decisions regarding programs serving our English Language Learners. Everyone is welcome to join. Please contact [email protected] if you will need translation.

Thank you to all of the families who have participated so far…we have $11,300 in sales & $5,000 in direct donations so far! But we need more help! The Friends of Alice Birney Foundation is already $12,000 behind in fundraising efforts (from cancelled events due to the pandemic) so we need to make our goal for the Fall Fundraiser. Our IB Program & Specials classes depend on it!

Another Birney tradition is being adapted to Zoom land: every fall, weather permitting, we invite the San Diego Astronomer’s Guild to set up their telescopes on the blacktop. When it gets dark, we begin our extremely popular annual Star Party, an event that inspires this principal to bury her head in the sand, since everything has to be dark, which the kids love but which makes me shudder with possibilities of disaster. This year we have changed the event to suit our current circumstances, and PTA arranged to work with the Ruben Fleet Science Center. Therefore, I am relieved! This is of special importance to 1st grade students who will be studying the “Sun, Moon and Stars” later this year – it would be a great way to begin the inquiry process for our first graders, so I highly recommend a huge 1st grade turnout.
